How to Encourage a Shy Child

There is nothing wrong with a child who is shy. Shyness is a personality trait not a personality fault. If you have a shy child, try to learn the situations that make your child uncomfortable. Then, seek to help your child make adjustments and learn to communicate his feelings. If a situation is uncomfortable for your shy child, don’t force the issue. Ask your child what needs to happen for him to feel comfortable. You may get an answer like, “I don’t want to go with the other children.” Ask specific questions like, “Is there anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable?’ Unfortunately, other children who are aware of your child’s shyness can ridicule and participate in unwanted jokes and play. As a parent, seek to understand your child and find solutions to help manage uncomfortable settings. Here are a few more tips to help you encourage your shy child.

  • Seek to find situations where your child feels the most comfortable.
  • If you have to introduce your child to a situation that is difficult, try to gradually make the introduction. For example, if you are attending a new preschool, daycare, or childcare, take your child with you when you visit and introduce the teacher, directors, and maybe other children. Let your child see the playground, gym, and eating areas before the first day of school.
  • Encourage your child to make friends with children who have a similar temperament.
  • Help siblings understand your shy child’s personality to help avoid teasing and taking advantage of the child’s quiet nature.
  • Help your child find and excel in the areas where he feels most comfortable and relaxed.
  • Let your child know that uncomfortable feelings will eventually go away as time passes.
