Indoor Activities for Cold Days

Posted on 02-02-2017

Snow days are perfect for sledding, snow angels, and snowball fights. Unfortunately, some days it’s just too cold to step outside, leaving you and your children with a long day ahead. Here are a handful of tips to help cure any cabin fever happening in your home.

Bond through baking: Who doesn’t love the smell (and taste) of freshly baked goods? Incorporating children in baking can give them a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to bond with family. Younger children can be given tasks like stirring or taste testing, while older kids can learn to measure ingredients. Afterwards, you can share a plate of goodies with a neighbor and bring some warmth to their day. Whether it’s cookies, cobbler, or brownies, this activity will be an absolute treat.

Have an indoor campout: Don’t have a tent? Build a fort using chairs, sheets, and pillows. Throw in a couple of sleeping bags or comfy quilts, take a snack, and tell some exciting stories! This is a tried and true kid favorite and will keep your children happy all day long.

Get some R&R: Take this day stuck inside as an opportunity to unwind and energize for the rest of the week. Cozying up with a good book or a classic movie is a great way to enjoy quality time with family while allowing yourself to get some rest and relaxation. Break out the hot chocolate, sit back, and relax!

Encourage creativity: Wintry days stuck indoors can elicit that “stir crazy” feeling we all know too well. However, you can unlock your child’s imagination and improve their cognitive development by participating in certain creative activities. Make up stories, put on a puppet show, or create a photo collage to encourage innovative thinking!

Remember, snow days don’t have to include movie marathons and reruns on TV. There are multiple ways to take a break from technology and keep your kiddos smiling. Try out one of these ideas next time the weather keeps you indoors all day!
