Spring, TX Childcare: Comforting Your Child in a Storm

Posted on 05-18-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Spring

The temperatures are already rising to summer-like highs and it’s not even June yet! We know this is to be expected living in the Lonestar State but is anybody else wishing spring would hold on for a little bit longer? Even though April showers are bringing us beautiful May flowers, they also bring us – severe thunderstorms. For toddlers and preschoolers, thunderstorms can be very scary and unsettling. There are a few ways you can make a thunderstorm less threatening for your young child – and make springtime a little more enjoyable for everybody!

A lot of what makes something threatening for children (and adults!) is simply not understanding what’s happening. In the case of a thunderstorm, taking the time to explain what causes the thunder and lightning can help your child feel more at ease. For preschoolers or kindergartners who may be old enough to comprehend the science behind the storm, take some time researching thunderstorms or checking out books from the library that talk about thunderstorms. If your child is not old enough to understand all the “nitty gritty,” then have fun making up different reasons for the lightning and thunder, “Oh! God just took a picture! Did you see the flash from his camera?” or “Wow! Those angels sure are loud when they’re bowling in heaven!” Keeping the scenarios silly and light-hearted can help your child relax and giggle through the storm instead of being frightened.

Another way to help your child overcome his fear of thunderstorms is by making sure you have family plan for when a storm hits. Prepare an emergency “severe weather” box with items such as non-perishable foods, water bottles, and flashlights. You can even practice as a family what you will do in case of very severe weather such as a tornado. Having a set plan can bring peace of mind to little ones who may feel helpless and scared during a storm. If you ever find yourself waiting out a storm in your bathtub or dark closet, try and keep the atmosphere light with singing or rhyming so your child doesn’t feel overwhelmed or scared of the dark.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Spring, we love taking care of our students. Their safety is our top priority. This is why we have severe weather procedures in place, such as fire and tornado drills, and we keep parents appraised of any early release days or unplanned school closings.
